More and more people now ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling through search results. Google shows AI Overviews at the top of many results, and tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly, often citing a handful of sources. If your website is not one of those sources, you are invisible in that moment, even if you rank well in traditional search.
The good news is that the work that earns AI citations overlaps heavily with good SEO. It just rewards clarity and structure even more.
1. Answer the question directly
AI systems pull short, self-contained passages. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of each page and under each subheading, then expand on it. A page that takes three paragraphs of warm-up before saying anything useful is hard to quote.
2. Use structured data
Schema.org markup tells machines exactly what a page is about: your organization, your services, your prices, your FAQs, your articles and their authors. It removes guesswork, and it is one of the most reliable ways to be understood correctly.
3. Make your entity unmistakable
Your business name, address, phone number, services and leadership should be consistent everywhere: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Inconsistent facts make it harder for any system to trust what it reads about you.
4. Write for experts, not keywords
Pages that show real experience, with specific processes, real examples and honest trade-offs, are cited far more often than generic content. Thin pages written to hit a keyword rarely get picked.
5. Keep your site technically clean
Fast pages, a clean sitemap, sensible internal links and server-rendered content all make your site easier to crawl. If important text only appears after heavy JavaScript runs, some crawlers may never see it.
Where to start
Begin with your most valuable pages: your services, your pricing and your most common customer questions. Add structured data, tighten the answers, and link those pages together. Then measure where your brand appears in AI answers and expand from there.
